This eight week program meets one night a week, either Monday or Thursday, typically for an hour. The fee $80 per couple for the entire eight week course. The fee is covered by Medicaid and is reimbursed by some insurances. Participates must register to attend. Class Description
Class 1 - Conception to Contractions
We will discuss late pregnancy concerns, fetal development and how your body prepares for labor. We will also talk about what you need to do to prepare for delivery.
Class 2 & 3 - Labor & Birth
For two classes we will talk about the physical and emotional process of labor and delivery. We will discuss the stages of labor and what to expect during each stage. We will begin discussing and practicing comfort techniques that will be helping during labor.
Be sure to bring a pillow or blanket for floor exercises.
Class 4 - Pain Management and Miscellaneous Topics
After learning the stages of labor, you will learn pain management through different techniques such as epidurial anesthesia, breathing techniques for relaxation and control. Also, we will discuss different types of deliveries such as induction an augmentation of labor, cesarean section and forceps delivery.
We will continue to practice floor exercises, so be sure to remember your pillow and/or blanket for comfort.
Class 5 - Tour of the Family Birth Center
We will take a complete tour of our Family Birth Center, showing you the nursery, delivery rooms and postpartum rooms.
Be sure to were comfortable walking shoes.
Class 6 - Breastfeeding verses Bottle Feed
One of the most important decisions an expectant mother will make is whether to breast feed or formula feed. We will help you understand the benefits for you and your baby of breastfeeding. A lactation consultant from our Breastfeeding Clinic will be available for all questions.
We will continue to practice floor exercises, so be sure to remember your pillow and/or blanket for comfort.
Class 7 - Recovery, Baby Care and Safety
This class you will learn about the care that you need to provide yourself and your newborn. You will learn about episiotomy care and physical and hormonal changes that occur for news moms. We will discuss topics such as Floyd's newborn nursery, circumcision care, diapering and safety care.
Class 8 - Infant and Child CPR
We will practice how to preform CPR on an infant and child.
Guest speakers are invited to speak to the class if the the schedule permits.
